Dell 1320C

Thursday, May 16, 2013
The Dell 1320C is a simple, no-nonsense printer suitable for the small or home office or small workgroup. The no-frills black cube is an effective all round printer for low demand environments.

The build quality is typical Dell. Solid and compact with no flimsy trays or flaps. The solid construction feels reassuring and safe, while the prints are good enough quality for most office applications. The standard 600dpi is enough for almost all applications. The monochrome prints appear after around 11 seconds of pressing Print, and are produced at around 16 pages per minute.

Text quality is good, with the edges appear straight with no bleed. Larger text of area of black were even, with no overprinting visible in the test. Color printing is just as good, with our color photograph being printed in 22 seconds. The overall quality was good, bearing in mind this is a laser printer.

Toner cartridges are replaced from the side, which is a departure from the norm, but works quite well. They are easily extracted using the clearly labeled latches and new ones clip into place after them. Both the monochrome and color cartridges are said to last for 2000 sheets, which isn’t as much as other Dell printers, but the price reflects that.

The printer will work pretty much out of the box. Installation is a bit of a pain, with lots of packing material to remove before installing the drum and toners. Driver installation is a breeze and will have you up and running in no time. The package contains all the tools necessary to print different sized documents on standard or odd-sized media. It even includes a setup video, which we advise you watch when you first get the printer out of the box.

Scalability is not an option, as what you see is what you get. There is no option to buy more paper trays, expand the memory or anything like that. In fact, the only addition you can make is to add an option network port. Seeing as this is most likely going to be in a small office, that benefit is negligible.

The 1320C is a good, quiet printer for those organizations who don’t print as much as some others. The quiet operation makes it ideal for the home office and the quality reproduction makes it suitable for most environments.
