Secure Shell or SSH

Tuesday, February 26, 2013
Secure Shell or SSH is a point-to-point tunneling protocol that is designed to pass encrypted traffic between two specific hosts. Along with tunneling traffic at the presentation layer, SSH also can provide application layer functionality, including a login shell similar to telnet (over the encrypted tunnel), and FTP-type services. The sftp system is an implementation of an FTP-like protocol over SSH. Used primarily on Linux and Unix based systems to access shell accounts, SSH was designed as a replacement for TELNET and other insecure remote shells, which send information, notably passwords, in plaintext, leaving them open for interception.
The SSH protocol addresses each of the basic security concepts.
SSH uses public-key cryptography to authenticate the remote computer and allow the remote computer to authenticate the user, if necessary. Note that SSH is a protocol that can be used for many applications. Some of the applications may require features that are only available or compatible with specific SSH clients or servers. For example, using the SSH protocol to implement a VPN is possible, but presently only with the OpenSSH server and client implementation.
Confidentiality: Each SSH connection is encrypted, preventing an eavesdropper from viewing information. For added security, SSH periodically reexchanges keys to ensure that a compromise of one set of keys does not compromise the entire session. In contrast, CTCP, IPsec, and IPv6 only exchange keys at the beginning of the connection.
Authentication: Before establishing a connection, the client must authenticate the server and the server must authenticate the client. Client authentication can be any combination of certificates (keys), passwords, or digital tokens. Although SSH is usually used with one-part authentication (a password or a key), it can support two- and three-part authentication systems. The server only uses a certificate to authenticate with the client.
Authorization: SSH limits the traffic that can enter the tunnel and can restrict how data exits the tunnel. For remote login access, SSH restricts authorization to the user’s login privileges.
Integrity: SSH uses encryption and cryptographic checksums to validate each packet. Any packet that fails an integrity check is viewed as an attack, which terminates the connection.
Nonrepudiation: Each packet is cryptographically signed using an HMAC, ensuring that the data actually came from the sender. SSH has three primary uses: establish a secure network tunnel, provide a VPN with port-forwarding characteristics, and supply application-layer login functionality.

All in One Printers

Sunday, February 24, 2013

"All in One Printers" or "multifunction printers" have become extremely popular over the last several years. These printers generally include copying and scanning functions, as well as sending and receiving faxes in some cases. Some of the newer models also include photo printing capabilities, with digital memory card readers and preview screens built right into the printer. All-in-Ones usually come in two popular combinations: those that provide printing, scanning, and copying, and those that also include a fax capability. The best strategy is to identify what is most important to you and then get a model that is strong in that area. A typical MFP may act as a combination of some or all of the following devices:
* Printer
* Scanner
* Photocopier
* Fax
* E-mail

Smaller multifunction printers offer the print, copy and scan capabilities for an affordable price and the fax feature is added on machines that cost a bit more. Larger desktop and floor models have those features plus networking, USB capabilities so you can print directly from a memory stick, Optical Recognition software so you can scan documents and turn them directly into a standard computer file, a hard drive that can store documents plus so much more. The quality of print also differs depending upon the machine with the low-quality print costing less than the higher-quality print.

Printing

Multifunction printers come in inkjet, laser or color laser models. Inkjet models tend to cost much less than the laser ones and supply a higher quality print for graphics or photos. The laser style is better for high-quantity printing and print much faster than the inkjet.

Scanning

It used to be that scanning pages from a book or any bound document was either impossible or quite a chore, but thats no longer the case. Many AiOs are built with flatbed technology, which is similar to what photocopiers use: a piece of glass on which you place your original document. You can also choose flatbed scanners that accommodate oversized pages.

Faxing

Fax or facsimile is a telecommunication for sending and receiving documents through telephone lines. MFP devices include this functionality which raises its capability. With the ability to fax built in to your printer/scanner/copier unit, you dont need a separate machine. And when you add flatbed technology, you can fax pages from a book. Some AiOs even send and receive faxes in color!

An All-in-One delivers multiple functions-printing, faxing, scanning, and copying-providing you with a complete office solution in one compact device. The benefits are pretty obvious: They cost less than several stand-alone devices, take up less space, and use less energy than separate units. Plus, their special features can boost your productivity and efficiency.
At last Production Printing MFP are large freestanding expensive units which dont include advanced networking features like the smaller version but instead concentrate on functionalities like high speed, high quality output, finishing includes book making with cover insertion. They often divide in two segment, light and heavy printing production which factor of speed differentiate them. By the way, all multifunction peripherals divide by factor of speed (pages per minute=PPM) into different segments.

Sunday, February 24, 2013
I replaced an ink cartridge in my Lexmark P3120 PrinTrio and when I closed the printer door I heard a pop! Now I get the msg printer door open.

Printer Emulation

Saturday, February 23, 2013
Emulator means someone who copies the words or behavior of another Synonyms. In computer sciences hardware, software or a combination of the two that enables a computer to act like another computer and run applications written for that computer is called emulator. In the past, it was often a hardware add-on that actually contained an instruction execution module for the emulated computer. Today, "emulator" more often refers to software, which provides a translation layer from the emulated computer to the computer it is running in. understand printer emulation, remember that a printer receives commands from the computer. These commands are in a specific printing language. Many manufacturers have developed printing languages but some of them have become industry standards. To meet the industry requirement manufacturers try to make their printers compatible with these de facto standards. PCL and Postscript are most popular languages and have become a standard, other manufacturers equip their printer according to the specifications of these languages. For example, while PCL was developed by Hewlett–Packard, it was widely copied by other manufacturers who offer emulations of HP printer. By the emulation of a HP printer another printer is able to understand PCL. If you are using an emulated printer, you may find “Laser Jet IIp compatible” or “PCL5 compatible” etc on it.
The term emulation especially applies to PostScript printers because Adobe itself does not produce printers and each PostScript printer produced by any manufacturer emulates PostScript. The term emulation also applies to printers that do not emulate the printer or the printing language of another manufacturer but that emulate another type of devices. For example some Laser printers have the ability to emulate other graphic output devices such as pen plotters. These printer emulate HP GL language which is used by pen plotters. In some graphic applications a plotter can take 30 minutes to print a complex drawing, while the draft output is produced from a laser printer in a few seconds. It is possible for designers to print a sample on laser printers and after finalizing the drawing it can be printed on plotter.
Adobe does not sell printers but it sells Postscript license to the manufacturers. Before Postscript Level 2, the license fees charged by Adobe were high, so some manufacturers tried to emulate the PostScript language. But nowadays license fees has been reduced and manufacturers prefer to use Postscript instead of emulated languages.

What is Network

Friday, February 22, 2013
A computer network is a group of interconnected computers. Networks make it possible for several people to share data and peripherals simultaneously. If many people need to use a printer, they can all use the printer available on the network. Computer network is comprised of connectivity devices and components. To share data and resources between two or more computers is known as networking. There are different types of a computer network such as LAN, MAN, WAN and wireless network. The key devices involved that make the infrastructure of a computer network are Hub, Switch, Router, Modem, Access point, LAN card and network cables. Before the advent of networks, computer users needed their own printers, plotters, and other peripherals; the only way users could share a printer was to take turns sitting at the computer connected to the printer. A network can be any size. For Example, connecting two home computers so they can share data creates a simple network. Companies can have networks consisting of a few dozen computers or hundreds of computers. The Internet is the worlds largest network and connects millions of computers all over the world.
Network devices are connected in different ways called “topology”. Topology refers to the physical layout of the network i.e. the locations of the computers and how the cable is run between them. To select the right topology for how the network will be used is very important. Each topology has its own strength and weaknesses. Lets have a look upon popular network topologies:

Star / hierarchical- Computers in a star topology are connected by cables to a hub. In this topology management of the network is made much easier (such as adding and removing devices), because of the central point. However because it is centralized more cable is required.

Bus - In bus topologies, all computers are connected to a single cable or "trunk or backbone", by a transceiver either directly or by using a short drop cable. All ends of the cable must be terminated, that is plugged into a device such as a computer or terminator. Most bus topologies use coax cables.
Mesh - A Mesh topology Provides each device with a point-to-point connection to every other device in the network. These are most commonly used in WANs, which connect networks over telecommunication links. Mesh topologies use routers to determine the best path.
Ring - In a ring topology network computers are connected by a single loop of cable, the data signals travel around the loop in one direction, passing through each computer. Ring topology is an active topology because each computer repeats (boosts) the signal before passing it on to the next computer.
Wireless - A wireless network consists of wireless NICs and access points. NICs come in different models including PC Card, ISA, PCI, etc. Access points act as wireless hubs to link multiple wireless NICs into a single subnet. Access points also have at least one fixed Ethernet port to allow the wireless network to be bridged to a traditional wired Ethernet network, such as the organization’s network infrastructure. Wireless and wired devices can coexist on the same network.
Understanding basics of networking will help you to configure and share network printers.

Canon PIXMA MP476 All in one Inkjet Printer

Thursday, February 21, 2013

The Canon PIXMA MP476 uses the same basic design as the PIXMA MP510. The black-and-silver body measures 451 x 353 x 169mm. The silver scanner lid conceals an A4-size flatbed scanner. Because the MP476 lacks an automatic document feeder, you cant scan legal-size documents.
The paper handling system is simple. A paper input support flips open in the rear and the front panel of the printer folds open to serve as the output tray. Next to the output tray is a small door that conceals two memory card slots. The slots accept most common types of memory cards, though some require an adapter (which is not included).

Hidden away under the memory cards is a PictBridge-enabled USB port (its so hidden that we missed it on first inspection). You can use it to connect PictBridge cameras for direct printing, or to attach an optional Bluetooth adapter (sold separately) for wireless printing. The one thing you cant attach to the USB port is a flash thumbdrive; the Dell Photo 926 lets you print files from an attached flash drive.

The control panel is hidden underneath a flip-up panel on the top side of the printer. Embedded on the underside of the panel is a 1.8-inch graphical LCD. The control panel is basic, though well-organized. Buttons include task buttons for copy, scan, and memory card modes, menu navigation buttons, and two start buttons--one for black-only and one for color.

The PIXMA MP476 uses a two-tank ink system: One black and one tri-color. It ships with regular capacity cartridges, but you can replace both with high-capacity versions.

Error 6A00 on Canon PIXMA MP800

Wednesday, February 20, 2013
The 6A00 is a Canon generic code for paper path jam. Some where in the paper path a sensor is activated indicating paper jam so the printer will give off a 6A00 code. As a Canon tech, I usually find the code, almost 90% of the time, is related to the purge unit being jammed with something and not being able to move. Moving the print head assembly will not clear a purge unit if its jammed with paper, paper clips, push pins, screws, cookie crisp, flower bud pods or the like. And yes I have found all those things in a purge unit. The offending item needs to be removed or the purge unit needs replacement. A Pixma MP830 would still be under Canon warranty, get it into a shop and save yourself the hassel.

Incidently, the 6A00 error pertains to all Canon printers made in the last several years, its not just used in one model. And its always a paper path error or purge unit.
I forget myself so here goes, the purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, lexmark, and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing. That is why youll find the print head assembly parked on top of it. It also has a an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

Open Prepress Interface

Wednesday, February 20, 2013
A workflow protocol developed by Aldus Corporation used in electronic prepress to link desktop publishing systems and high-end CEPS. Essentially, high-resolution color images are stored on a central network server, to which all the workstations are connected. Low-resolution files are sent by the server to individual computers working on page layout. The low-res images are imported into the page (in a kind of FPO way), positioned, and comments sent back to the OPI server provide specific cropping, scaling, positioning, and color information about the image. The servers PostScript driver inserts the proper instructions into the PostScript code. When the page is ultimately output to an imagesetter connected to the network, the high-resolution image is swapped for the low-res one, and the indicated instructions as to cropping, etc., are executed. The work with layout documents which include big graphic files (high resolution, big size) may become a test for someone’s patience due to the rate of the processing. The dealing with this kind of files, which need a lot of memory in the workflow, can be simplified with an Open Prepress Interface (OPI) System. Although the PCs and networks become constantly faster and powerful, OPI is used for the Prepress workflow in order to minimize the waiting period. It is in use for 10 years now, but only a few people know this application. If a graphic file is placed into a document, layout applications normally integrate the whole graphic file. If the graphic files are big, the processing of the document becomes very slow due to the quantity of the graphic data. The resources needed by the PC and the network (if used) are unnecessary, because low resolution graphic files are sufficient for the work on a monitor in order to create the layout or to judge the colours. Because of this, OPI-programs create low-resolution graphic files with the same dimensions and place them into the layout document instead of the originals. The high-resolution files are integrated by an OPI-server just after the print job is started. The OPI-server finds the data by so called OPI-comments, which are included in the PostScript print file or in a PDF file. These OPI-comments describe, among other things, the memory needed, the sizes, and the position of the graphics in the layout document. Another aspect is the possibility to share the work of one project between the graphics and the layout, because the final graphics are embedded after the print job is started.
OPI is useful for minimizing high-resolution-file travel on networks; their large file size can make traffic screech to a halt. And by utilizing only low-resolution viewfiles on workstations, processing speed is increased. The efficacy of OPI is contingent upon the use on the workstations of OPI-compatible software; many page layout programs are increasingly including support for OPI, although some OPI specifications for color separation havent been effectively nailed down yet. Although OPI is often compared to DCS, the latter is strictly a color separation protocol, while the former is more of a workflow protocol.

The Gel Printers

Tuesday, February 19, 2013
Some printer manufacturer have introduced a new inkjet technology nowadays, called GelJet technology. Machines that use this technology are equipped with a GelJet engine. The gel used in the GelJet technology is a pigment-base ink. , it does not go into the fibers of the paper, bleeding the image. The gel dries as soon as it comes into contact with the paper. This minimizes smudging and bleeding images. To understand pigment-base ink we study main component of ink.

The main components of ink are:

Chemical base:

It is the carrier for the colorant and keeps the ink in a liquid state. It can be water, oil, or other solvent.

Colorant:

It is the substance that gives color to the ink. It can be a dye or a pigment. Ink that uses dye as the colorant is called dye-based ink. Ink that uses pigment as the colorant is called pigment-based ink.

Dye-based ink:

It is a chemical that fully dissolves in the chemical base. Generally dye-based ink has a brighter color than pigment-based ink, but because the dyes are dissolved in the chemical base, they tend to soak into the paper, which makes the ink less efficient and causing the ink to bleed into the paper.

Pigment-based ink (Gel)

A pigment does not dissolve in the chemical base. Pigment is a very fine powder of solid colorant particles, dispersed throughout the chemical base. The pigment particles do not soak into the paper together with the chemical base, they remain on or between the fibers on the surface of the paper. Because pigment particles are larger than dye particles, pigment-based ink is more durable and ultraviolet resistant. Also the pigment particles can be coated to enhance the properties of the ink.

Printing Fonts Printer Basics

Monday, February 18, 2013
Font is a set of type characters of a particular typeface design and size. Each typeface, such as Times Roman, Helvetica and Arial, is typically made available in four variations: normal weight, bold, italic and bold italic. Thus, for bitmapped fonts, which are fully generated ahead of time, four fonts would be required for each point size of the typeface. For scalable fonts, which are generated in any point size on the fly, only four fonts would be required for each typeface.
Printer languages describe the contents of pages. Basically, a page contains text and images. The term “text” refers to the characters, letters and also other symbols, on a page, which form words in a human–readable language. Anything printed on a page, which is not a picture or graphic illustration is text (you might say that anything that is no text is a picture or graphic illustration). Text is made up of predefined letters and symbols, which are normally stored in the printer as fonts. Fonts are complex structures, which have several main characteristics. Among others, some main characteristics e.g. are
• the character set,
• the typeface,
• the size.
The major characteristics of fonts and the corresponding terms are described here. Besides text in form of characters, a page may contain images, too. The later posts introduce you to some aspects of printing images.
Characters and character sets
A single alphabetic letter, numeric digit, or special symbol such as a decimal point or comma. A character set is a collection of symbols, the letter “e” is a character, as is the symbol “_”. There are many thousands of characters used by different languages around the world, and storing them all would require a large amount of memory. To alleviate this problem characters are stored in useful collections or sets, which contain the letters and symbols needed for everyday use in a particular language or group of languages. There are character sets for use with specific
languages, such as German, French, Swedish etc., and character sets containing less frequently used characters, such as mathematic or decorative symbols. In this way, each character set contains only a subset of possible characters, called the character set.
Character sets for languages that use the English alphabet generally contain 256 symbols, which is the number of combinations one byte can hold. Except for special fonts, such as Dingbats and Greek symbols, the symbols are the same for the first 128 characters. The letters may have different styling due to their typeface, but an "M," for example, is an "M" in the same sequential order in each character set.
Typeface family, typeface and font
The design of a set of printed characters, such as Courier, Helvetica and Times Roman is called Typeface. The terms "typeface" and "font" are used interchangeably, but the typeface is the primary design, while the font is the particular implementation and variation of the typeface, such as bold or italics (or none; the normal, upright style). A major difference between typefaces is whether there are tiny horizontal lines at the tops and bottoms of any straight lines. The age-old serif typeface is Times Roman while Helvetica is the traditional sans-serif typeface. Since the TrueType fonts have become so ubiquitous, Times New Roman and Arial have become widely used for serif and sans-serif fonts.
A font is a set of printable or displayable text characters in a specific style and size. The type design for a set of fonts is the typeface and variations of this design form the typeface family. The characters of the same typeface family have a common appearance based on the
characteristics of the letter’s shape. Thus, Helvetica, Arial, or Times are typeface families, Helvetica italic or Arial bold are typefaces, and Helvetica italic 10-point is a font. In practice, font and typeface are often used without much precision, sometimes interchangeably.
Point size
In typography, a point is the smallest unit of measure, being a subdivision of the larger pica. It is commonly abbreviated as pt. Characters always have a certain size that is defined in points. In typography, a point is about 1/72 of an inch and is used to measure the height of characters. (Historically, a point was.0138 inches, a little less than 1/72 of an inch, but this has changed.) The height of the characters is one characteristic of fonts. Some fonts are referred to as fixed-point fonts because their representation allows for only one size. In contrast, a scalable font is one that is represented in such a way that the size can easily be changed.

Dot Matrix Printers

Monday, February 18, 2013
A dot matrix printer or impact matrix printer refers to a type of computer printer with a print head that runs back and forth on the page and prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like a typewriter.
Dot-matrix technology uses a series or matrix of pins to create printed dots arrangedto form characters on a piece of paper. The speed at which a dot-matrix printer prints is measured in the number of characters it can produce per second. Unlike a typewriter or daisy wheel printer, letters are drawn out of a dot matrix, and thus, varied fonts and arbitrary graphics can be produced. Because the printing involves mechanical pressure, these printers can create carbon copies and carbonless copies.
The print head mechanism pushes each pin into the ribbon, which then
strikes the paper. The original dot-matrix print heads had 7 pins, while newer,
letter-quality print heads use 24 pins to produce near letter quality (NLQ) documents. Each pin is driven forward by the power of a tiny electromagnet or solenoid, either directly or through small levers (pawls).
Dot-matrix printers are called impact printers because the printing mechanism physically strikes the page. The continual motion of the pins through the print head creates a ton of heat, so avoid touching the print head after printing a handful of pages or more. A hot print head can give you a nasty burn.
Papermoves through a dot-matrix printer using a tractor-feed mechanism. Spoked wheels located on each side of the paper feed mechanism move the paper. The spokes on the outer edges of the wheels fit into holes on the sides of specially designed continuous form paper. As the wheels turn, they pull the paper through the printer.
Because impact printers physically strike the page, you can use themto create multipart forms with ease. Many offices and government agencies use them for that very reason. Although impact printers have been replaced in most homes and offices by newer, sexier inkjet and laser printers , they still retain a substantial portion of the market in their niches.
Advantages:
1.They can print on multi-part stationary or make carbon copies
2. Low printing cost
3. They can bear envoiromental conditions.
4. Longlife

Disadvantage
1. Noise
2. Low resolution
3. Very limiter Color performance
4. Low speed

What is Document management system DMS

Sunday, February 17, 2013

A document management system (DMS) is a computer system (or set of computer programs) used to track and store electronic documents and/or images of paper documents.

From the very beginnings of modern office work, the workflow of data management has been an
important subject. Right from the beginning, office work included the production as well as the administration and distribution of documents. Different technologies were used for these purposes. In the past, the typewriter was the most important device for the preparation of documents. For the storage of documents, various conventional systems came to existence which supported the storage, the locating and the distribution of documents with the help of cardcatalogues or folders. Since the seventies, the distribution of documents was supported by modern photocopying processes. This document distribution process was mostly used in connection with manual file systems, and competed with the modern information technologies based on EDP (Electronic Document Processing) when these were introduced the first time.

Beginning in the 1980s, a number of vendors began developing systems to manage paper-based documents. These systems managed paper documents, which included not only printed and published documents, but also photos, prints, etc.

Later, a second system was developed, to manage electronic documents, i.e., all those documents, or files, created on computers, and often stored on local user file systems. The earliest electronic document management (EDM) systems were either developed to manage proprietary file types, or a limited number of file formats. Many of these systems were later referred to as document imaging systems, because the main capabilities were capture, storage, indexing and retrieval of image file formats. These systems enabled an organization to capture faxes and forms, save copies of the documents as images, and store the image files in the repository for security and quick retrieval (retrieval was possible because the system handled the extraction of the text from the document as it was captured, and the text indexer provided text retrieval capabilities).
The traditional storage of documents had a lot of disadvantages compared to electronic archiving - above all, the large expenditure of time, material, and personnel for the organization and maintenance of the manual process. In addition to the enormous space required for the storage, conventional file systems are also regarded as relatively unreliable concerning the locating of documents.  Documents have to be copied and stored repeatedly since they are usually passed on to different places, e.g. to the different departments of an enterprise. In these time-consuming distribution channels, documents were lost easily, filed in a wrong way or they simply fell into oblivion. Sometimes, even different versions of a document existed because its older version had not been replaced by the new one.

EPSON C67 Info

Saturday, February 16, 2013
actually i,m also using C67, C68 and C87 epson printer with CISS or continuous ink supply system but unfortunately this practice waste me a lot of ink just by doing printhead clean-up.
this technology is not really worth buying for.

this because if can can just figure out how this printer feed ink by original cartridges you can see easily the problem brought by this CISS.

Basically the main problem is the pressure difference between the tank and the ink delivery cartridges with the built-in auto reset chips, this, even just simple pressure calculations you can actually derive a negative pressure pulling the ink towards the tank,
every after printing (if you can notice) you have to do the routine head clean-up and therefore wasting a lot of ink. base from experience it would be much better if you just refill the original cartridge and transfer the auto reset chips to the genuine cartridges.

High-fidelity print output

The XPS print infrastructure enables high-fidelity output by reducing or eliminating image data conversions and color space conversions that typically occur during printing.

The benefit for users is that smooth shadings, fades, and glow effects used in modern documents print just as intended, without loss of image fidelity or color fidelity.

Faster printing of documents with rich graphics

With XPS-enabled enterprise class printers—available now from many printer manufacturers—the time spent waiting to finish printing a rich, color graphics document is dramatically reduced.

Consider a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that has the same color background repeated across 30 slides.

Before XPS, that enterprise printer would render that same color image 30 times, creating a massive "spool" or print file (and a long wait for everyone else that needed the printer). These massive spool files were also a tax on network bandwidth.

With XPS, the color image is sent to and rendered by the printer once.
